    Secondary

    A holistic approach to curricula

With a legacy spanning over 90 years in education and nearly 40 years in the realm of international education, Yew Chung has been at the forefront of redefining the concept of international education (Thompson and Hayden, 2008; Bunnell, 2008, 2015). The school has boldly challenged the notion that international education is merely the transplantation of a national curriculum from one country to another.

Instead, Yew Chung advocates for a harmonious blend of Eastern and Western educational philosophies, emphasizing a profound understanding of both Chinese and Western languages and cultures, with the aim of nurturing students to become globally conscious citizens, deeply committed to positively influencing the future.

    • Philosophy & Objectives

YCIS incorporates Western and Eastern cultures, and our students experience an international, multicultural, and bilingual learning environment. Students hone their linguistic skills in both English and Chinese, andgain a deep understanding of and respect for cultural diversity and global awareness.

    Curriculum

Our international curriculum reflects our Philosophy & Objectives, culture and ethos. We are committed to delivering a curriculum that is subject interlinked and holistic, as well as challenging and accessible to all students admitted to the school.

The YCIS Secondary curriculum uniquely defines the essential skills, knowledge, concepts, values, and enduring understandings that enable our students to achieve academic and personal success at university and beyond.

    A Holistic Education

Our secondary programme incorporates skills and co-curricular activities that provide numerous enrichment opportunities beyond the classroom, including clubs; activities that foster creativity and critical thinking; volunteer work with the YCIS Seeds of Hope charity; World Classroom trips; Experiencing China excursions; sports and athletic competitions; applied arts exhibitions; and music and drama performances.

    Co-Principals

Two Co-Principals, one Western and one Chinese, oversee the programme at our secondary campus. Our Co-Principals work as a pair, providing academic leadership to teachers, students, and the YCIS community. They consult, collaborate, support, complement each other and share equal authority and accountability for all school operations.

The Yew Chung Curriculum - an international, bilingual curriculum was written by in-house curriculum experts, referencing from curricula of the UK, US, Australia, Singapore and China. It prepares students to excel in the IGCSE and IBDP curricula at upper secondary level and beyond, empowering them with the essential skills to adeptly tackle the challenges of the 21st century.

    • Chinese Language and Culture Programme

Through YCIS's internationally recognised Chinese Language and Culture Programme, all students improve and refine their Chinese language proficiency and cultural competency. Our Chinese courses are divided into: (1) Chinese as an Additional Language (CAL) and (2) Chinese (Mandarin) as a Foreign Language (CFL). We divide students into different classes according to their language background and special needs, and help them to develop their proficiency in Mandarin Chinese through daily language lessons. In addition, Lower Secondary students deepen their connection to and understanding of Chinese culture by participating in Chinese cultural activities and courses on Chinese culture.

    • Character Education

In accordance with YCIS’s philosophy and objectives, our Character Education programme in our Lower Secondary curriculum cultivates moral values and principles while nurturing the whole development of the child. Through classroom education and a wide range of extracurricular activities, students acquire practical knowledge and skills to better their lives and to learn how to navigate the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural challenges they will encounter as they become  adults.

    • Arts

At YCIS, we believe that art and culture should play an essential role in the school's curriculum, as well as in the lives of our students both inside and outside the classroom. Through our secondary art courses, students acquire and improve their knowledge of materials, processes, and practices. They also learn how to engage confidently with art, crafts, and design, both in the contemporary world and in  different cultures and historical periods.

    • Music and Drama

Lower Secondary students focus on listening, performing, and creating in our Music and Performing Arts programme. We encourage the students to learn about and understand music from different styles, genres, and parts of the world. Each year, YCIS students participate in various music and drama activities and learn how to evaluate their own and others' contributions. We encourage our students to work individually and in groups to become confident creators and performers.

    • Physical Education

The various components of our Secondary Physical Education curriculum are interrelated to help students develop a healthy and active lifestyle. Our students develop interpersonal skills, such as teamwork, communication, and conflict resolution, as well as the ability to decide about tactics and strategies in sports.

Our YCIS Hong Kong Secondary campuses have formed a wide range of sports teams, and students can compete against other international schools in both local and national leagues.

    • Trips and Excursions

In addition to regularly scheduled class field trips integrated into the Secondary curriculum, YCIS students can travel throughout China and to other countries through our Experiencing China programme and our World Classroom programme. Through our Experiencing China programme, students can gain cultural appreciation on trips to different places in China, such as Guilin, Qingdao, and Inner Mongolia. Our World Classroom programme provides opportunities for our students to visit different countries and experience first-hand the cultures of other countries.
