YCIS recently organised the annual University Fair, inviting 97 universities and higher education institutions from 14 countries and regions including the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, Europe, Asia, and Hong Kong. The participating universities included famous overseas institutions such as The University of Durham, Edinburgh, Bath, Warwick in the U.K., and the Boston University, Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania in the U.S. Programme seminars were also held beforehand to deepen students’ understanding about their subjects of interest.
Preparing for IB exam and finding their education path, students from Y12 and Y13 were eager to receive first-hand information from the universities. Hiba Ajarti, Y13, told us how the Fair helped her to collect better information. “The University Fair is very helpful for the students because we can directly communicate with the universities you want to apply to, and get information that we don’t get elsewhere.”
Another Y13 student Albert Chou expressed that the Fair enabled him to develop a better understanding of the differences among the universities, helping him to identify goals and choose where to further his studies.
Samantha Chang, Y12, appreciated that the University Fair brought a wide variety of universities to the school since students could ask the representatives of their desired universities any questions they hope to know.
Jennifer Poh from University Guidance Office (UGO), the coordinating department of the Fair, also explained the significance of the event to our students. “It’s very important for them, especially starting from Year 11. It gives them a good idea of the opportunities and options available to help them make informed decisions. They have all these universities at the door step, and they don’t have to go out anywhere else to get information. We bring them here to them.” Poh said.
YCIS also encouraged secondary students from lower grades to attend the Fair so as to enhance their planning and decisions on their future study and education path.
As an important advisory body that students rely on, the YCIS UGO team provides comprehensive advice to equip students to pursue their ideal education pathways. Other than the annual university fair, mini fairs highlighting specific subjects and education system are occasionally organised to equip students with practical tips essential for their ongoing success.
